Netflix Review – 4/30/12

You may be a Netflix subscriber and, if you’re like me, find the films available via the Instant Streaming option underwhelming. Each Monday I write up a post showcasing new arrivals and hidden gems I’ve seen and recommend.

Season of the Witch is a Gothic action / horror film set in a period following the medieval Crusades. Nicholas Cage and Ron Perlman star as former Templar warriors who are tasked with escorting a demonically possessed girl to a temple to be exorcised. This is by no means a “film”, but a “movie”. It’s mindless fun and, if you can leave your brain out of the equation, an enjoyable if frivolous experience.

Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead is a fantastic documentary following the journey of Joe Cross, a wealthy Australian businessman who, in effort to become healthier, embarks on both a 60-day juice fast and a road trip across the United States to talk to people about health. What really makes Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead such a great film is how well it conveys nutritional and physiological knowledge.

My mother put it best when she described it as “anecdotal”. Everything presented in the film in inarguable; you can’t dispute the effects of juicing and eating a plant based diet when you physically see somebody lose 200 pounds. Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead is throughly entertaining, heartwarming, and informative, and you owe it to yourself to set 90 minutes aside to watch this film.

Iron Man 2 is the sequel to the wildly successful Iron Man (2008) starring Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire genius playboy, Tony Stark. While Iron Man 2 isn’t the same quality film as the original, don’t be fooled by critics, as it is an enjoyable superhero film that simply suffers from a few passable issues.

What do you think? Have you seen any of these films? Leave a comment below!

  1. Reblogged this on The Templar Knight and commented:
There’s a good scene in the film where the witches are drowned – rather disturbing and haunting. Much of it is an amusing romp through the Middle Ages and I’d recommend for a fun, very gothic night (or knight) in.

    • It definitely has little pockets of greatness, but the majority of it is mindless fun. I just appreciate that it was just a simple action flick and knew it. The fact that it’s set in the Middle Ages helps too.
